On the 19th of August the spectacular Laboratory of Light,
located in San Angel was the venue for the event Light, Glass, Art and Architecture organized by Gustavo Avilés and
Taller de Vidrio, a stage for the first international meeting of glass artists.
Around 7 pm the Laboratory of Light was filled with
various well known personalities of the worlds of architecture, visual arts and
lighting. Speaking in the meeting were Kischi Hentschel creator and director of
"Taller de Vidrio", a space dedicated to research and artistic production of glass in Mexico, and representative of Derix Glass Studio, one of the best
recognized glass ateliers in the world due to the artists from many
nationalities it houses. They have created first level work which is displayed
in many stages around the world such as the Cologne Cathedral or the Hong Kong
metro.
Also present were Gustavo Avilés, director of
Lighteam, architectural lighting design studio, who is committed to promoting
the culture of light in Mexico and Narcissus Quagliata, a visual artist who talked
about the great experience working with glass can represent.
After the presentation, a tour of the works on display
took place. Some of the great artists whose work was displayed included Jan
Hendrix, Byron Galvez, George Popodopolus, Stephann Lamberts, Jose Castrillo,
Martin Donlin and Kischi Hentschel The art was lit by the Lighteam Gustavo
Avilés team, who once again showed why it is considered one of the top lighting
studios in the world.
During the evening guests enjoyed the display Light,
Glass, Art and Architecture. A reflection on the interaction between these subjects
was reinforced by artistic macroprojections of textures referring to art on
glass on the architectonic facades of the Lighteam facilities and neighboring
buildings.
This event offered guests a wide range of interaction
possibilities and applications for glass as an architectonic element, expressed
by means of lighting design. Light can reveal artistic and material qualities
of this particular element: glass.
This display definitely motivates us to keep in mind
the interaction between light, glass, art and architecture and its possible
applications in future work of any dimension.
