On the 29th of October of 2009 the fifth presentation of the Icons of design awards took place, an award which recognizes the most outstanding architecture and design in Mexico.

More than 650 projects were evaluated by the editorial council of Architectural Digest México, competing in numerous categories such as automotive design, furniture design, watchmaking design, lighting design architecture and restoration and interior design to name a few.

The award ceremony took place in the Franz Mayer Museum, venue which promotes the most important collection of decorative arts in Mexico and houses temporary design exhibitions of major international importance.

This year's statuette was designed by the recognized sculptor Jorge Marin, who carried out a unique design in bronze, representing a wing. Of each category only top three projects were preselected to compete for first prize.

In the category of lighting design the three contenders were the Univerity Museum contemporary art (MUAC), located in the University Cultural Center of the UNAM, a Project designed with the latest daylighting technology, as well as the Santa Prisca Church of Taxco, first stage of the Taxco city of light master plan and the Guadalupe Basilica in Mexico City. Both MUAC and Santa Prisca were projects by Lighteam Gustavo Avilés.

The first prize in this category was awarded to architect Arq. Gustavo Avilés by the architect Noriegga, for the excellent work done on Santa Prisca Church. D.I. Miriam Jiménez was in charge of the project supported by architect Miguel Ángel Ortega.

Architectural Digest México belongs to the prestigious The Conde Nást Publications editorial company, which has more than a century of worldwide editorial prestige, which makes this prize one of the most sought after awards in the industry.
