Lighting offers a new vision of reality while it encourages citizens to discover their surroundings in a way that is not possible by day, and this is something that the Lighting Urban Community International Association (LUCI) believes in.
LUCI is a network of cities of light on five continents that have the vocation and aims to make lighting a major tool in urban life, architecture and planning.
LUCI and Phillips have been exploring how lighting can improve the quality of city life for several years now, and they recognized that a competition for “Light cities achievements” could stretch the intellectual and creative boundaries towards innovative solutions. This is how the people.city.light award was born.
The 2007 edition of city.people.light award is going to take place in November, and the award ceremony will happen in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
The purpose of this award is to recognize the best project that integrates an appreciation of the needs of contemporary urban living and the notions of city, people and light in a coherent lighting strategy.
The jury is composed by professionals in lighting design, landscape architects, town planning, urban architects and elected officials. This year, the Mexican architect Gustavo Avilés, is invited to be part of this selected jury.
All entries were received on January and the requirement was that the lighting project needed to be of a permanent nature and visible to citizens free of charge. The projects need to be completed in less than two years before the contest.
The jury will award three cities or towns for their projects. Three new impressions and atmospheres are going to be created.
