In 2006 the city of Eindhoven, the city where
the Philips Company was born in 1891, realized the first Dutch Festival of
Light. This festival is an international exhibition of art and design
installations in public space which makes use of light as a material, a medium
and as an object. The first edition received more than 50 000 visitors, both,
Eindhoven´s citizens and visitors from outside the country. The project was a
complete success and that is why the decision of continuing the Festival was
taken.
Curators Bettina Pelz and Tom Groll, supported by the team and production of
CityDynamiek, worked together again to set up this year GLOW Festival edition.
Once again, Eindhoven
demonstrated that it is a city with a lot of knowledge of light. From November
8th to the 18th, light installations where positioned all around the city´s
centre as a temporary addition to the permanent installations of architectural
and urban lighting.
The aim of the festival was to reinforce the idea of public space as a public
forum. The art and design installations of GLOW Festival offered to the
visitors and its habitants a new outlook to the nocturnal potential of the
city. Artists, lighting designers and architects worked together to build
a unique atmosphere where people experienced a beautiful synergy between the
natural environment and the amazing possibilities of artificial light.
This year's edition theme was "sealed spaces" as possibilities to develop light
installations.
